A fortress with a festive soul

Built in the 12th century with Almohad origins and transformed over the centuries, the castle has borne witness to a long and storied history. Its outline, perched atop the hill, dominates Villena and has become an inseparable symbol of the festival. It appears not only on the city’s coat of arms, but also in the memories of generations of Villena residents, who associate it with the most epic moment of each September.

The Heart of the Embassies and Guerrillas

During the festival, the Atalaya Castle is transformed into an open-air theatre. The Embassies take place here, central events that represent the dispute between Moors and Christians for possession of the castle. In these performances, steeped in drama and tradition, ambassadors from both sides confront each other in a dialectical duel that culminates in the symbolic capture of the fortress.

The scene gains even more intensity with the arquebusier guerrillas, who fill the air with thunder, smoke, and excitement. The echo of the shots resonates between the castle walls, creating a unique atmosphere that can only be experienced in Villena.

La Mahoma and the Castle: A Unique Tradition

One of the most unique elements of the festival is the figure of La Mahoma, a symbol of Moorish power, which is placed in the castle after the Muslim victory.Days later, after the Christian embassy, La Mahoma is removed and handed over to the victorious comparsa. This tradition, unique to Villena, makes the castle the symbolic epicentre of the transition from Moorish to Christian rule.

A place that comes alive every September

The Atalaya Castle is much more than a medieval fortress. In Villena, it is a symbol of identity and a living space that, every September, is filled with music, gunpowder, history, and excitement. Thousands of people gather in its surroundings to attend the embassies, experience the sound of arquebuses, and feel the festive spirit of the city.
