“Moros Realistas” (Moorish Realists)

Elegance, Innovation, and Festive Spirit Since 1928

The Moorish Realists Comparsa was founded in 1928, although it didn’t parade through the streets of Villena until September 9, 1929.
Their debut was marked by a determined stride, a new aesthetic, and an innovation that would forever change the festival: the introduction of the Moorish march as a musical style in the parade. Since then, the Realists have become synonymous with distinction, elegance, and progress within the Moorish faction.

Alcoy Inspiration and a Spirit of Renewal

The creation of the Moorish Realists was directly influenced by the Filà Realistas of Alcoy, one of the most iconic comparsa in the neighbouring city.
The idea took root in the popular Bar Benjamín on Paseo de Chapí, where Joaquín Cortés, Enrique Guillén (former members of the now-defunct “Tercios de Flandes” comparsa), and two workers from Alcoy employed at Don José Molina’s machinery factory gathered.

On August 24, 1928, they formally submitted the application to form a new comparsa, which was approved by the City Council that same year.
The comparsa made its debut on September 9 during the Entrance of Captains and Second Lieutenants, parading for the first time on Zarralamala Street.
That historic afternoon, “Canaleras” performed as Captain, and Enrique Guillén appeared as Second Lieutenant, wearing the characteristic attire of Realistas for the first time.

Identity and Legacy

Since its founding, the Moros Realistas have established themselves as a modern comparsa, respectful of tradition but always open to innovation within the festival’s framework.
Their style is easily recognisable in the parade thanks to the elegant sobriety of their costumes, the harmonious rhythm of their marches, and their signature use of the Moorish march—a musical style they introduced to the festivities, which has since become standard in most Moorish comparsas.

The Moros Realistas have been central to many of the most memorable moments of the festival, participating in key events such as the Embassies, Entradas, and the Solemn Procession. They have consistently brought their trademark class, precision, and emotional depth to every occasion, making them one of the standout comparsas.

A Comparsa with Its Own Identity

Today, the Moros Realistas remain one of the most distinguished comparsas in Villena’s Moorish faction.
Their unwavering commitment to honoring their history, respecting their roots, and proudly representing their city during every parade has earned them the love and admiration of both festival-goers and locals alike.
