Combative Spirit, Naval Heritage, and Unwavering Loyalty

The Marinos Corsarios are the proud heirs of the ancient Comparsa of “Marineros” (Sailors), whose presence in the Moors and Christians Festival of Villena has been documented as far back as 1884. Though the exact year of their founding remains uncertain, their legacy is deeply embedded in the oldest traditions of the festival.

For decades, they paraded through the streets in the classic sailor’s uniform—white trousers, a tunic, and a blue cap—representing maritime tradition with simple elegance. In 1957, the comparsa modernized its look, adopting a Spanish Navy-inspired uniform: a dark blue jacket with admiral stripes and a white peaked cap. However, this military attire only lasted two years.

A Turning Point: The Birth of the Corsario

By 1959, new festival regulations banned several outfits considered historically inaccurate, including those of the Sailors and the Americans. Rather than dissolve, the comparsa made a bold decision: to reinvent itself.

In 1963, they returned under a new name and identity: the Marinos Corsarios. With a fresh image and renewed energy, they quickly regained prominence—earning both public affection and respect within the festival community.

Few, But Fierce

Today, the Marinos Corsarios are the smallest comparsa in the festival, with under 200 active members. But what they lack in numbers, they more than make up for in passion, unity, and commitment.
Each member brings an intensity and dedication that are rarely matched. Their appearances in major events—La Entrada, the Embassies or Procession—are always refined, dignified, and unmistakably theirs.

A Comparsa with Its Own Identity

The Corsair Sailors stand apart for their distinctive visual aesthetic, which blends naval tradition with a festive reinterpretation full of character and style.
Their greatest strength lies not just in history or costume, but in the loyalty of their people. They’ve proven that it’s not the size of the comparsa that matters—but the heart behind it.

For over a century, the Corsairs have embodied the values of resilience, reinvention, and communal pride. In doing so, they’ve become a living example of how to evolve without losing one’s soul, and how to honour the past while sailing confidently into the future.
