Comparsas and Festive Positions
Comparsas: Two Sides, One Passion
Villena boasts 14 comparsas, equally divided between the two main factions: the Moors and the Christians.
Each comparsa group has its own style, unique scenery, distinctive costumes, and even its own music.
However, they all share one common trait: the pride of representing their city with passion, elegance, and tradition.
Festive Positions: History, Honour, and Representation
Comparsas and their festive positions not only shape the spectacle, but also represent the soul of the celebration.
Every costume, every step to the rhythm of the music, and every gesture has a story behind it… and thousands of people make it possible.
The festive positions have their origins in the ancient military structure of the soldiery.
Since 1638, the presence of Captains and second lieutenants in the parades has been documented, responsible for leading their comparsas with poise, respect, and solemnity.
In Villena, they have a peculiarity: they do not wear large insignia, but are identified by the sash and sabre (captain) or the flag (second lieutenants).
Since 1955, two beloved female figures have been incorporated:
“Regidora” (Regidor): the highest representative of the festivities and the city.
“Madrina” (Godmother): the image of each comparsa, dressed in the typical Villena costume.
These women represent elegance, tradition, and festive pride, actively participating in all official events.
Special Squads: The Art of the Parade
The special squads are one of the visual jewels of the festivities.
These are select groups within the comparsas that parade in spectacular costumes designed and made each year for the occasion.
They are synonymous with creativity, quality, and spectacle.
In Villena, approximately 40 special squads parade each year, limited by rule to one squad for every 100 festivalgoers in each comparsa.
This balance helps keep traditions alive while allowing room for innovation and design.
Their presence in parades such as La Entrada (The Entrance) or La Cabalgata (The Cavalcade) turns every step into a veritable catwalk of history, fantasy, and local talent.
