A Unique Performance Steeped in Centuries of History

Villena is one of the few towns that preserves a performance as unique as the Conversion of the Moor to Christianity. This deeply symbolic event is part of the Moors and Christians Festival and offers an experience that is both theatrical and emotional. It is a staging with a 17th-century text by Diego de Ornedillo, reminiscent of the old comedies of the Spanish Golden Age.

What is the conversion?

The Conversion is a dramatic reenactment written in the 17th century by playwright Diego de Ornedillo that portrays the moment when a Moorish character, defeated or moved by faith, chooses to embrace Christianity. Modelled after the classic comedies of the Spanish Golden Age, the performance is as much literary theater as it is a symbolic rite. Its power lies not only in its historical narrative but in its universal themes of reconciliation, transformation, and shared identity.

A setting that elevates the moment

The Conversion takes place in one of Villena’s most iconic religious space, alternating in different years or contexts:

+ The Archpriestal Church of Santiago, a magnificent Valencian Gothic-Renaissance temple in the heart of Villena.

+ The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Las Virtudes, located 7 km from the city, where Villena’s patron saint is venerated.

This place offer solemnity and splendour, creating a deeply moving atmosphere where performance and devotion meet.

A cultural treasure with deep roots

The Conversion is more than a dramatized act; it’s a living testament to Villena’s commitment to preserving its intangible cultural heritage. Together with the Embassies, it forms part of a unique theatrical tradition rooted in the people, echoing the popular religious dramas that once animated Spanish towns during major feasts.

The tradition that distinguishes us

Few Moors and Christians festivals in Spain retain this performance in their programs. Therefore, Villena proudly distinguishes itself by keeping this event alive, with the original text and respect for its staging. It is, without a doubt, one of the most unique elements that reinforce our festival’s candidacy for a Festival of International Tourist Interest.
